1. Set the Mood

Before you dive into decluttering, make sure you are in the right mindset. Select a time when you won’t be rushed and take a moment to set the mood. Open the curtains to let in natural light, or turn on some soft, relaxing lighting. Play some of your favorite music to help pass the time and make your decluttering time more enjoyable. Creating a relaxing and calm atmosphere, however that looks for you, will make the decluttering process more enjoyable and less daunting!

2.Assess the Situation

The next step in this list on how to declutter your bedroom is to take a good look around and assess the clutter situation. Identify areas that need the most attention, such as your closet, dresser, or bedside table. As you will see in step 3, the 3-box rule can apply to any area. So, although in this post we include steps to declutter your closet, dresser, and bedside table, you can use the same approach for additional areas that need to be addressed. Under your bed, room corners, and bookshelves are some examples where the same approach can be used.

Consider using this checklist to help you stay on track.

3. Three Box Rule

The 3-box rule will help you get organized to make progress quickly, and its simple:

Get 3 boxes and label each:

  1. keep
  2. throw
  3. donate
When decluttering a space, be prepared to make quick decisions – keep the item, toss the item, or donate the item. By sticking to these 3 options, decluttering can be quick and easy. Be prepared to make hard decisions!

If you expect to come across many sentimental items, consider creating a 4th box for sentimental items. You can gather all of your special belongings from all areas of the bedroom and then sort through them last.

Remember, the goal is to declutter. You will feel great when this is over!

4. Declutter Your Closet

Your closet is often one of the biggest sources of clutter in your bedroom. This is likely a biggie so if you want to start small, consider completing steps 5 & 6 first and then come back to this one.

Start tackling your closet by setting up your 3 boxes (4 if you opted for the sentimental box). Next, sort through your clothes and shoes, placing each item in one of the corresponding boxes: keep, throw, donate, sentimental.  Clothing items that are in good shape but you don’t wear anymore, consider donating them. Anything old, stained and no longer worn toss. The items you wear regularly – keep! While the closet is empty, take the time to vacuum, mop, and wipe down the walls and hardware in the closet to ensure its clean when you begin putting stuff back in it.

Invest in some space-saving closet organizers, such as hanging shelves or shoe racks, to keep your closet neat and organized. See step 9 for recommendations.

If you aren’t adding any new closet organizers, then begin putting all of your “keep” items away neatly. If you came across items that should be put in another place, do not put them back in the closet! Leave them in the keep box for now.

Get a garbage bag and put the “throw” items in it and put them in the garbage. Don’t leave things hanging around, this will just create more clutter. Remember, the goal is to REMOVE clutter, no add to it 😉

Drop your “donate” boxed items at a local charity.

Now that the closet is emp

5. Tackle Your Dresser

Using your already created boxes, carefully remove everything from your dresser drawers and place in the appropriate box. Wipe the drawers to ensure they are clean and ready for when you begin putting your belongings back in.

Clear off the top of your dresser using the boxes to sort any clutter present. Wipe and clean the top of the dresser along with the drawer fronts to freshen it up. While the dresser is empty, it may be a good time to pull it out from the wall if needed to vacuum and clean behind it.

Consider using drawer dividers to keep your clothes and accessories organized and easily accessible. See step 9 for some product recommendations for dresser organizing.

Slowing start neatly putting your stuff away. Again remember, you are only putting stuff in the dresser that belongs in the dresser. Anything that should be put elsewhere, leave in the keep box for now.

Again, take the “throw” items out to the trash and drop the “donate” items off at a local charity or give to family and friends.

6. Organize Your Bedside Table

Your bedside table is often a clutter magnet. Books, charging cables, gadgets, lamps, watches, jewelry and more seem to gather on bedside tables.

Start by cleaning off the top of the table, again using your boxes to sort everything. Then move to drawers and shelves if your bedside table has any, using the same boxes to sort items.

Once empty, clean shelves, drawers and the top of your bedside table before placing any items back.

Consider using a small tray or basket to corral smaller items beside your bed and keep them from cluttering up the surface. Also consider charging options that don’t result in multiple plugs and wires cluttering up you bedside space. See step 9 for product recommendations.

Once again, throw items should be put in the garbage and items for donation should be taken to a local charity.

7. Create a Relaxing Sleep Environment

Now that you’ve decluttered the main areas of your bedroom, it’s time to focus on creating a relaxing sleep environment.

Invest in high-quality bedding that feels comfortable and luxurious. Add some soft, fluffy pillows and a cozy throw blanket to make your bed inviting and comfortable. Have a lamp nearby so that you can easily turn off lights when you want to sleep.

See step 9 for product recommendations.

8. Personalize Your Space

Finally, don’t forget to personalize your space and make it feel like your own. Add some artwork or photos that bring you joy, or incorporate your favorite colors and textures into your decor. A few carefully chosen accessories can make your bedroom feel warm and inviting, and reflect your unique personality. I personally think that this is one of the most important steps in this post about how to declutter your bedroom because it is a step that will help your space remain clutter free. If you are successful and create a truly comfortable space that is just for you, it will be easy to keep in clean and clutter free!
